Lesson 6: Why use the Fine Motor Method?

So, what is the benefit of The Fine Motor Method and combining fine motor skills practice with academic activities? What is the significance of this course? These are the different things that I have come to realize over my years of teaching.

  1. Time- Every school is different, but from my experience with everything going on (different classes, different objectives that need to be taught, lunch, snack, nap) I found myself having a hard time adding separate fine motor skills practice. As we know, children’s attention spans are also limited, and being able to accomplish multiple lessons can be a challenge.
  2. It’s HARD! - Strengthening hand muscles is hard for young children. It is actually hard for everyone. Have you ever tried to switch hands and write with your non-dominant hand? Or even written with a pen or pencil for a long time lately? Our muscles get tired and it is hard work. Adding fun learning activities to these strength-building exercises makes it more fun and helps the child to develop more stamina in these areas.
  3. Hands-on learning- research shows that children learn better with age-appropriate hands-on activities. Since these lessons are hands-on anyways, it’s easy to include a fine motor component and combine both areas.

I hope that you feel that you have a better understanding of the importance of early fine motor skills after this section. Please let me know If you have any questions.
